Winchester switches on to Choose Well message

Winchester city centre
The NHS Hampshire Choose Well campaign was out in full force to support the Christmas lights switch-on in Winchester city centre last Thursday.

The city centre was crammed with over 900 people, as special guests X Factor band The Reason received a rapturous reception. Also on stage was Peter Pan and Tiger Lily to promote this year’s pantomime, and the University of Winchester Choir, winner of the Choir Idol competition to find the best school choir in Hampshire.

There was one moment of suspense when the countdown to the light switch-on began too early, and Cllr Richard Izard, Mayor of Winchester, got to zero before the lights were ready. It was only a temporary glitch and the crowd was full of good cheer when the lights did eventually appear.

The family event was supported by the NHS Hampshire Choose Well campaign, which is being co-ordinated by NHS Creative. As well as a prominent logo on stage, healthcare information flyers were handed out to everyone at the event.

Ads promoting Choose Well have also been running on The Breeze 107 in the build-up to the event, and these will continue in the lead up to Christmas as part of the ongoing Choir Idol competition.

The Choose Well campaign aims to inform the general public of NHS services available to them in their local area. It aims to direct patients to the service best suited to meet their clinical need, which in many cases may well be self-care, pharmacies or minor injury units. As well as signposting patients to the most appropriate care, it also seeks to help to relieve pressure on A&E and GP services by reducing unnecessary patient attendance.
